The fashion press were elated when Derek Lam, one of NY's hottest young designers, launched his diffusion line, 10 Crosby Derek Lam, last season. Sitting super comfortably alongside his much-loved mainline, the collection brings with it more than 20 years of experience in the upper echelons of the fashion sphere where roles at Michael Kors and Tods and numerous CFDA awards fill his CV.
Informal wearable luxury is your design signature. Why?I am always interested in what it means to lead a contemporary life and I always consider what will work for women at this moment. To me, this moment is about luxury without formality.
How much of your mainline is reflected in 10 Crosby?I design 10 Crosby with the same criteria I have for the Derek Lam collection, the sense of style, intelligence, over indulgence, with surprising twists which makes the collection look special, feel special, and elevates the experience of what is considered accessible fashion.
Does New York inspire you?New York is where I live and where I get much of the inspiration for the 10 Crosby collection. It is the look I see all around me.
And 10 Crosby is named after your NY address?Yes, and looking out of my window on Crosby Street I am inspired by many of the girls walking by and their effortless style.
What is it about these girls?I really think they're a microcosm of how women dress for their life today which is valid beyond the 10013 zip code.
Does the 10 Crosby woman live a cool city lifestyle? The 10 Crosby woman is fashionable and has a multi-faceted life. She is going from work to perhaps a gallery to meet friends and needs clothing that can take her through each moment. She has an urban yet informal sensibility of dressing.
Describe 10 Crosby for aw12 in 3 words:Playfully chic daywear.
What's the perfect capsule wardrobe?PJ pants, a soft shouldered blazer, fine gauge knits, a sheath dress that works day-to-evening, a fur vest, a slim cut button down shirt and a 10 Crosby logo T-Shirt.
The line is very strong on prints. What inspires them? All of our prints are designed in house. For Fall I was inspired by classic menswear designs and gave them an unconventional twist -paisleys and plaids made oversized and in unexpected colours; pajama patterns from the 1950s reinterpreted as prints of kittens and yarn balls.
What do you always ask yourself when designing the collection?I think about how I can make classic design new and fresh for the cool 10 Crosby customer.
