Now in its second season, Carhartt Heritage joins a growing stable of niche Carhartt collections (including A.P.C. X Carhartt also available at my-wardrobe) which cast a spotlight on the brand's most interesting qualities. For Heritage, this means taking its cue from an archive that dates back to the late 1900s. The result - a homage to classic Americana - works a perfect balance of old-meets-new/history-meets-modernity, that us guys now demand from our wardrobe.
A Detroit brand by origin, the business first worked out of an attic with just four sewing machines and five employees. Its ethos; 'honest value for an honest dollar', looked to the design of overalls for the hard-working blue-collar man and it's these overalls, brilliantly preserved, that provide a template for Heritage.
Once worn by miners, builders and the like, it's not surprising that durability remains at the forefront of Heritage's values. Nicholas Gordon-Harris from brand HQ notes that people are 'paying a lot more attention to fabrics, quality and the history of a garment and Carhartt
Heritage prides itself on reflecting all three.' But that doesn't mean you'll find any actual overalls in the line-up. Heritage is a more elegant incarnation of the original collection and a well-constructed shirt jacket or smart maroon sweat would sit just as happily in an office friendly style mash-up as during the weekend.
Gordon-Harris' personal favourite for SS12 is the Camo Savant pant (coming soon). As well as being on trend for the guy that's hungry for those standout pieces, it's 'both well-made and eye-catching'. These trousers lay the groundwork for a great off-duty wardrobe and also come in a more neutral olive those with more classic sartorial sensibilities. The plaid shirt and grey Henley top boast the same characteristics.
So, if the history of a brand and the tradition of quality construction are your thing then a Heritage line couldn't be a better fit and if you crave a sleek, modern look, then Carhartt's impressive CV of keeping the whole look up-to-date should be paid attention.
