The white jean challenge - Polly Vernon steps up

The single most unlikely - yet most undeniable, and arguably, the hottest - denim trend of the new season? White jeans. Gleaming, attention-seeking, really quite unsettling. Blame Alexander Wang, or Gucci, or Victoria Beckham - all of whom showed white jeans as part of their Spring 2011 collections.

Why the trepidation? Because the white jean is not an easy piece to wear. It’s not just the risk of unseemly coffee spill stainage, either. There’s significant fashion stigma attached to this particular piece. White jeans are tightly intertwined with the signature style of Elizabeth Hurley, who wore virtually nothing else for a few years in the early part of the 2000s. And retro Hurley is not an aesthetic any of us really want to be channeling right now. So: here’s how to do white jeans right.
