Why jewellery? I grew up in a small town in the middle of South Africa, quite far removed from anything glamorous. Every time we went to visit my grandmother in the city I would go to her bedroom and play with her beautiful enamel hairbrushes and jewellery on her dressing table. I was transported into a fantasy world full of shiny and beautiful things and have been fascinated ever since.
What or who inspires you most? I adore the work of Tim Walker. I love the way he looks at fashion. It’s all about creating another dimension.
Who would you most like to design a piece for? I would love to make something for Julianne Moore. It would probably be a bib type necklace in emerald green to complement her complexion.
Which jewel do YOU like working with most? I don’t have a favourite material as such, but I do like using vintage elements. Anything that has a history to it - when there is a story behind a raw material then it makes the piece so much more special.
Is there a time and a place for statement jewellery? Yes, yes, yes! But, it’s not so much about the time and the place as it is about the person wearing it. You have to feel beautiful in a piece. You have to feel confident. If you don’t, it shows.
Which one iconic piece in history defines jewellery for you? 7000 years of women adorning themselves with jewellery... I don’t think I would ever be able to choose one piece that defines jewellery but there are pieces that I adore- the multiple pearl necklace that Audrey Hepburn wears in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara which princess Diana wore in the famous Mario Testino shoot, the huge emerald earrings that Angelino Jolie wore to the Oscars in 2009. There are so many jewels out there...
